Back in 2023, Elkjøp Nordic and Mojang Studios created a collab campaign where gamification was the key to an eco-friendlier world!
Urban Miners was an initiative that rewarded Minecraft players with Minecoins for recycling old, outdated electronic equipment. Because frankly, a lot of us have at least some old phones, cables and whatnot that are best to recycle properly. And all of those old computers and phones hold valuable minerals and metals from finite natural resources (and that’s far better than sentimental value). So, recycling them can provide life for new electronic devices!
UNESCO Greening Schools
Around half of the schools across the globe lack access to a curriculum that tackles climate change. And educating young minds when it comes to environmental awareness is imperative for everyone’s future.
Together with UNESCO, Minecraft Education has been supporting the UNESCO Greening Curriculum Initiative which aims to provide learning tools about climate change education.
Together, UNESCO and Minecraft Education work to find global partners alongside Microsoft to create educational content for teachers and students. One example is Planet Earth III, which was created in partnership with BBC Earth.
UNESCO strives to “green” schools, with a “Green School” being defined as a learning institution that addresses climate change through its teaching, facilities, community partnership and much, much more. Green Schools also aims to promote a wide variety of aspects tied to sustainable development.
Minecraft Education will support UNESCO to “green” schools on every continent, hoping to reach even more students and teachers!
There's only one planet Earth, and we must continue to treat it well. Hopefully, you'll be part of that journey, too!
