Minecraft Realms FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Minecraft Realms.
Why are there two versions of Realms?
We've developed separate versions of Minecraft so that the game runs well on different platforms. The version you find on mobile, console and Windows 10 runs on one kind of code, and the Java Edition for PCs and Macs runs on another. These two versions are incompatible with each other and are developed separately with different features. Players on Java Edition can't play on console, mobile or Windows 10 Realms and vice versa.
How much does a Realms subscription cost?
Realms has slightly different pricing plans for different platforms.
The cheapest is $3.99 per month for a server supporting up to 3 simultaneous players (including the owner) on the version that runs on mobile, console and Windows 10. It's $7.99 for a server supporting up to 11 simultaneous players.
The Java Edition version starts at $7.99 for a server supporting up to 11 players. You'll get the best deal if you’ve set up a recurring subscription, or buy multiple months at once. Windows 10 and Xbox don't currently allow recurring subscriptions.
How long will my Minecraft Realms subscription last?
On most platforms, subscriptions are available in chunks of one, three, and six months, or as a recurring monthly payment. Windows 10 and Xbox don't currently allow recurring subscriptions.
Does the owner of a Realm have any special privileges?
On Java Edition, the owner of a Realm can see who's been playing. Realms for mobile, console and Windows 10 doesn't support this, but Realm owners of any version do get to choose who to invite, and switch between game modes. Realm owners on mobile, console and Windows 10 can also generate invite links to add new members, download a back up of the Realm and promote other members to operators which means they will be able to use slash commands in game.
Can I export my Minecraft map from Realms?
You can export your maps from any versions of Realms at any time, even for a limited duration after your subscription has expired.
Can I upload my Minecraft map onto Realms?
Yes, you can upload your own maps to Realms! For Java Edition we currently support worlds up to 5GB in size. That’s really big, in case you were wondering. In order to use a world template from the Minecraft Marketplace on mobile, Windows 10 or console, you should create a new world using the template, then upload the world to your Realm.
Does Realms support modding?
The Java Edition version has support for a growing number of minigames and custom maps made by the community, while Realms on mobile, console and Windows 10 has support for Add-Ons and marketplace maps, textures and skins. However, full modding support is not yet available. Sorry!
Can I see which of my invited players has accessed my realm?
On Java Edition, Realms has an activity monitor which shows when players have been on your realm. Realms on mobile, console and Windows 10 doesn’t support this, but you can see in the game itself which players you’ve invited through Xbox Live.
What editions of Minecraft support Realms?
Realms is currently available for Java Edition versions of Minecraft and Minecraft on mobile, Windows 10 and Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles, with support for the Nintendo Switch coming soon..
What's Xbox Live and why do I need it to play Realms?
Xbox Live is the technology we're using to connect players on console, mobile and Windows 10 together. Minecraft Java Edition does not require Xbox Live at all. Though Xbox Live is named after the Xbox console, it doesn't require an Xbox at all and it's completely free to use. There is a paid service called Xbox Live Gold but this is only required for Realms if you are playing on an Xbox One.
Do I need Xbox Live Gold to play Realms?
Only if you are playing on Xbox One S or Xbox One X. Xbox Live Gold is required for all multiplayer services on the Xbox One, no matter what console game you are playing. Xbox Live Gold is a paid service and is not required to access Realms on mobile or Windows 10. You only need to sign up to Xbox Live, which is free to use. Minecraft Java Edition does not require Xbox Live at all.
Can I play on Realms across different devices?
Yes! Most versions of Minecraft now allow players to get together, regardless of which device they're on. Anyone playing on Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Android, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Windows 10, Windows Phone, Amazon Fire tablets or Gear VR can play together. Players of Minecraft Java Edition can currently only play with each other.
I'm playing on Windows 10. Which version of Realms do I need?
If you bought Minecraft from the Windows 10 store, you'll need to buy Realms for Windows 10. However, if you bought Minecraft through the Minecraft.net website then you'll need Realms for Java Edition.
Does Realms for Java Edition work with older versions of Minecraft or the newest Snapshots?
You'll need to be running the most recent release of Minecraft to use Realms. Snapshot releases are not supported.
Can I use admin commands?
Yes. Owners of Realms on any platform will have access to most existing commands. On Minecraft for mobile, Windows 10 or console, Realm owners can also promote members to be operators, which allows them to use slash commands in game as well, but does not grant them any other admin rights.
How do I cancel my recurring Realms subscription?
For Java Edition edition, log into the Mojang Account website. All your subscriptions are listed there and can be cancelled at any time. For mobile, console or Windows 10, your subscriptions are managed through the Minecraft app on the device for which you first activated Realms.
What happens to my Realms worlds if my subscription ends?
If your subscription ends, you will not be able to access your Realms worlds online, but you can download them. If you choose to renew your subscription in the future, you will regain access to your worlds again - they won't get deleted.
